I have been on the Internet observing many new and exciting things over the past 5 years.

There are a lot of good opportunies out there but there are also some get rich quick schemes which aren’t so good.

I see more and more different types of money-making, multi level marketing ideas popping up all the time. Different people with different ideas. Some work for some, some work for many and some don’t work at all.

Another thing I have observed in MLM is something that many people do not realize.

Multi level marketing works far better in urban America than it does in rural America. Basically MLM is a numbers game and, frankly, in rural America we are short on those numbers. Like one fellow says, “There are more cows out here than people!” But being from rural America, and being a farmer, I have some points to share that may help many people–both rural and urban–to generate more income for themselves on the Internet.

In farming, if you only raise one crop and get hailed out, you have lost your only chance for profit for that year. If you raise two different crops and they both get hailed out, you’ve lost twice as much money. However, if you diversify and not only plant a crop but also raise livestock, you increase your chances for a good profit. Then, even if the crop gets hailed out there may still be value in feeding livestock who will in turn give you some margin of profit. If you raise several different grain crops, like a couple of different hay crops and, in addition, you raise a couple types of livestock, then when one crop price is poor something else will be better and your margin for profit increases.

What does this have to do with multi level marketing or MLM? If you only work one good program trying to build a downline and you acquire a prospect but he is not interested in that type of program, you have lost him. Someone down the road will probably sign him into their program. If you have two programs, then you have two chances of sponsoring him into one of those programs. If you have four different ones, you now have four chances. Only if they are different types of programs, all good, will you have a good chance of having something to offer that might interest him. You would then have four chances at one lead, instead of one chance at one lead.

I’ve heard over and over from MLM leaders–stay focused on one program; put all your efforts into just one; longevity builds credibility, etc.

How come so many MLM’s go broke in two or three years? How, with all the years of fighting mother nature, government red tape and bad prices, does the farmer still survive? The answers is, he stays focused, but he diversifies. Maybe people in urban America can learn a lesson from someone who lives where there are more cows than people! I was once involved in just one MLM and I just about went broke. Then I remembered what my Dad used to tell me, “You have to have more than one way of making money. You can’t put all your eggs in one basket, because you might fall and break them.” I am now in three MLMs and a couple of two-tiered programs, and I make a good living.

If you don’t want to try something new or are happy where you are now, stay focused on just one program and pray for luck. My advice, however, is diversify and work toward a healthy profit!

I’ve been writing poetry for quite some time. I care about the art and how the art effects people.

I want to talk some about how poetry is seen in my opinion and how narrow the view of some can be when it comes to poetry and the worth and value it holds in society. I’ve heard many times by reviewers and critics and even booksellers that poetry books are hard to sell and that little interest is taken in the art of poetry by the general public but I beg to differ on these views held by so many in the literary world.

I feel poetry is such a unique and expressive art that has stood the test of time and as we look back on poets like Wordsworth and Dickinson and all the wonderful poets of a time gone by we can all agree that nobody can discount or dismiss the contributions these people have made to the literary world.

The Wordsworth’s and Lord Byron’s are still out there today working hard to bring back into the mainstream the powerful emotions and feelings that once struck a chord so long ago. These people are putting their heart and soul into their words and putting forth messages that they want to share with readers from all origins and backgrounds.

We should not put limitations on them by telling them their art is dead or that their art is not much of a selling point in society because it is and if it wasn’t we would not have so many poetry forums and websites accross the infinite space of the internet from nation to nation. One website I visited has over five million poets in their database alone so obviously their is an interest in poetry and it’s growing bigger with every passing day. Multitudes of people from accross the globe enjoy this art we call poetry and this is a fact that should not be ignored.

There is also a problem in my view with some people who take the role of critic and these people judge the work of others and seek to influence how an individual chooses to express themselves through poetry. I feel that each person and expression is unique and I have never been much of a fan of the critic as Teddy Roosevelt reminded us in ” The Battle of Life ” it’s not the critic that counts and I agree.

Individualism and uniqueness spawns genius in my opinion in every facet of life or work and it’s also certainly true when it comes to poetry. I want to read new and freshly presented material from someone original. I don’t want to see someone trying to copy another artist or his or her ways. I want to see someone expressing their own ways that I will not judge because I feel I have no rightful place in doing so.

We must remember that it’s not my opinion or the opinion of a critic that counts when it comes to you and your work and the feelings you wish to present. These things are yours and yours alone that nobody should touch or try to fine tune in any fashion. If Shakespeare had allowed his work to be sorted out and played with by the masses then he would not have been the Shakespeare we know today and your work will not be yours if you allow it to be changed to fit the views of others.

Let your vision and your work live and die on it’s own and let it live independantly and develop into what you wish it to be not what someone else wants it to be so it never ceases to be your very own.

I coached as my wife was delivering our third child. She was at the final phase of delivery where the last few pushes would result in the birth of our second daughter. As the crown of our daughter’s head protruded slightly from the very end of the birth canal, my wife’s obstetrician yelled, “Stop! Don’t push…”

He quickly positioned a hypodermic needle and injected anesthetic into a section of my wife’s perineal tissue - the skin between the vagina and the anus. Next he grabbed a scalpel and carefully addressed the freshly anesthetized area. The attending nurse and I instinctively wheeled our heads to the side so that our eyes could not see what happened next. “I never watch this part,” she told me, as the doctor quickly performed a simple procedure known as an episiotomy. Our daughter was born minutes later. As mother and daughter were meeting face-to-face for the very first time, the doctor was busy stitching the incision created during the episiotomy.

The idea behind performing an episiotomy is twofold. The first reason is concern for the baby. Passing through the vaginal canal is the most stressful time for a baby experiencing a traditional vaginal birth. Cutting the perineal tissue creates a wider opening so that the baby can slip through more easily. The second reason is, in theory, to prevent out-of-control tearing of the mother’s perineal tissue. The idea is that, by making an incision, the area affected by cutting or tearing is controlled to a certain extent by the attending physician. The problem is that not all mothers experience tearing, so the laceration can be unnecessary.

According to an article by Salynn Boyles published on WebMD (http://my.webmd.com/content/article/110/109783.htm), The Journal of the American Medical Association (Vol. 293 No. 17, May 4, 2005) reports that researchers screened nearly 1,000 medical resources published in the past 60 years looking for data measuring the effectiveness of the procedure. Data from twenty-six articles contained relevant content and were aggregated to form conclusions.

The article reported that there was “fair to good” evidence that the results of routine episiotomy were not advantageous over the results of those with restrictive use of episiotomy. In cases where episiotomy was performed routinely, the severity of the laceration, the degree of pain suffered, and the amount of medication needed to treat was no better than for cases where episiotomy was not routinely performed.

Though most of the individuals were not followed late into life, relevant studies have shown no benefit from episiotomy for the prevention of urinary incontinence or pelvic floor muscle relaxation. Studies have also shown that “impaired sexual function - pain with intercourse - was more common among women” who had the procedure. A report published in the British Medical Journal in January of 2000 reported that women who received episiotomies during delivery had a significantly higher incidence of anal incontinence - the inability to control bowel movements and gas - than their counterparts who did not receive the procedure.

At best episiotomy is something no one wants to observe; at worst it can cause pain, lengthen the time it would normally take for a couple to resume sexual relations, and cause anal incontinence. The ideal situation would be to not only avoid episiotomy, but also to avoid tearing.

Informed mothers are learning more about this subject and taking the time to speak with their obstetricians about it, well in advance of their scheduled birthing date. They are adopting a strategy that includes special exercises using a device called EPINO. The EPINO is a soft balloon-like device that is inserted into the vaginal opening and gently filled with air to a specific pressure.

As the balloon is inflated the tissues are gently stretched. The pressure is then maintained for a period of time so that the tissues can adjust to the new opening. Daily the amount of air is increased slightly so that the vaginal opening is gently prepared to receive the baby’s head. The end result is that the tissues are not only better prepared for the birthing process, but - because the tissues are not suddenly and violently stretched - the tissues more readily return to their prior state.

The philosophy is not new. In fact, there exists an age-old African custom by which an expectant mother gently inserts a calabash or gourd into the vaginal opening, to manually stretch the pelvic floor muscles and the perineal tissues. This process is still in use today in many parts of Africa. Modern science provides us with knowledge and materials that perform a similar function, but in a safer and more sterile way.

Unlike the calabash or gourd, the EPINO can be used not only to prepare the pelvic floor muscles and perineal tissues for birth, it can also be used to regenerate the tissues through post-partum exercises. Approximately three to six weeks following childbirth (ask your OB/GYN when to begin), a mother can begin once again to use the EPINO.

By clenching the pelvic floor muscles - a process known as a “kegel exercise” - the new mother will see the pressure on the EPINO gauge rise. This is called “bio feedback” and helps to inform you that your pelvic muscle exercises are being done correctly and to track your progress as muscle strength returns. Expectant mothers can experience mild to severe anxiety as childbirth approaches. Using EPINO a few weeks in advance of childbirth can help to reduce this anxiety.

Clinical studies have shown that using EPINO will:

• Reduce the incidence of elective episiotomy
• Reduce the incidence of perineal tissue tearing
• Increase APGAR scores (measuring the overall health condition of the newborn baby)
• Decrease the need for certain drugs during childbirth
• Reduce anxiety for the mother

Women who have used EPINO in preparation for childbirth report some very satisfying results:

“My daughter was born after 12 hours of labor without problems and spontaneously without cut or tear, thanks to the training with the EPINO and to perineum massage. But the interesting thing about it was that, during the phase of the passage of the baby’s head, the thought came to me: you know this feeling, you have managed it before! Instinctively I knew what was happening and, above all, in which direction I should press. (Of course, during the training I did not press, but was conscious of the direction…) In addition, I cannot forget that I was able to practice the “letting go” in the pelvic floor beforehand and thus, was far less frightened before the birth … “

“The birth was very quick (2 hours). I had a very short expulsion phase (approximately 15 minutes) and gave birth with an uninjured perineum. I consider these factors to be due to the EPINO. … I think that without EPINO there would definitely have been a perineum injury, because when practicing the exercises one senses the progress and how the tissue becomes gradually more extensible. The handling of the instrument is easy. All in all I can most warmly recommend the EPINO … ”

The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is held in Elko, Nevada. This year it starts tomorrow (Friday, February 3, 2006 and ends Sunday, February 5, 2005). At least I think that is when it starts and ends. Our newspaper didn’t bother to give the dates. Everybody knows it’s on this weekend.

There are lots of things to do at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. They cost money but my newspaper says that children are free at “non-ticketed” daytime events. That is Idaho talk. I think it means. Children don’t have to pay for free daytime events. Duh!

So what can you do? You gamble, eat, and listen to cowboy music. That way you won’t have to listen to the monotone of cowboy poets reading there stuff about manure, bobbed wire, and lonesome mesas. (Mesa means “table” in Spanish. A flat hunk of ground that you have to look up to is a mesa as in “Can ya’ see that critter up thar’ on the mesa? I guess you know a critter could be a horse or a cow.

I read some of my poems at such an activity when I lived in Payson, Arizona. There were about a zillion people wondering around the park, eating grilled bratwurst and washing it down with cola drinks. I think there might have been ten listening to me read my poetry. My wife was one of them so make that about nine.

So that you will see why nobody was listening to me and why few will leave the poker table in Elko, here is one of my poems I read there in the park in Payson, Arizona:

The Banker’s Son

(Monday, March 29, 1999)

He spurred his horse, the banker’s son,

His daddy died that day
When the bank was robbed his dad was shot
And the robbers rode away.

Their horses were lightnin’ fast,
With bottom, they were full.
Ugly Jo looked back and said,
Ride you bunglin’ fools.

They spurred their horses all the more,
Leavin’ the banker’s son in the dust,

But then they stopped to rest the stock,
That’s when the fun began.

The banker’s son rode up and said-
They were drinkin’ whiskey then-
Lay down your guns, you’re goin’ to hang
When I get you back to town.

Fat Charlie laughed,
A banker’s son is goin’ to bring us in?
He drew his colt,
The rich kid shot,
He did Fat Charlie in.

Slim Willy said,
Did you see that?
The kid looks pretty good,
But Fat Charlie was slow, Banker Boy,
I wouldn’t try that again.

You killed my pa, you filthy crew.
You shot him and he’s dead.
Slim Willy said, Twas Charlie, Son,
And then he poured out lead.

The banker’s kid rolled in the dirt,
But then he came up shootin’.
Slim Willy fell and ate some hurt,
The banker’s son was swellin’.

Pock-faced Pete looked at the two dead oafs, and said,
That was some shootin’.
But Charlie and Willy weren’t all that fast,
To prove it, I’m a willin’.

The banker’s boy spit in the dirt,
Which formed a little ball.
I’m goin’ to shoot again, he said,
And you are bound to fall.

So Pete said, Okay, we’re comin’ in
To let the court decide,
But instead he drew his six-gun,
The boy fired twice, Pete landed on his side.

The boy blew smoke

From his gun’s barrel,
There were two more there to kill.
One was Ugly Joe, the other, Angry Bill.

Bill said, Now you little runt,
I gettin’ mad as hell,
Not that you shot those ugly bruits,
My pockets that will fill,
But I ain’t cowin’ down.
You’re goin’ down to hell.

The boy said, You don’t learn fast,
Do you Angry Bill?
He drew and shot,
Not once, but twice,
Bill rolled on down the hill.

Ugly Joe looked at the men
All layin’ on the ground.
He said, My God! That was some shootin’!
You’re the fastest gun around.

Now tell me son, Before I die,
How you learned to shoot.
I saw you tellerin’ in the bank,
For gun’s you had no roots.

The boy looked down,
And said these words,
My dad was just like you.
He went to jail
And paid the price
And he taught me how to shoot.

Ugly Joe kicked a rock and said,
What were his name, my son?
The boy said, the Sierra Kid,
Ugly Joe pulled his gun,
And
Died.

The boy left those parts,
Never to be seen again,
They never found the loot at all,
Just those five dead men.
