pH and Health
(0)
The body is alkaline by design, but can be acidic by function. It functions at its best when the pH of its internal biochemical environment, measured as a whole, is equal to 7.39, meaning slightly alkaline. The normal range of blood pH is very small, from a slightly more acidic reading of 7.36 to a more alkaline reading of 7.42. A reading of anything higher or lower than these figures indicates acidity (from 7 to 7.35) or alkalosis (7.42 to 7.8). If these limits are exceeded, the body can no longer function, and death results.
The zone of optimal blood health extends only from pH 7.36 to pH 7.42; illness will accompany any incidence of acidosis or alkalosis. Of these two, acidosis is by far the most common - more than half the population suffers from this condition.
The pH of the body’s organic fluids and tissues varies from one part of the body to another. When we say the ideal pH of the body is 7.39, this refers primarily to the pH of the blood, and to a lesser extent that of the body’s internal environment, meaning all organic fluids such as lymph and extra and intracellular serums (fluids surrounding or within the cells). Blood is indeed “a very particular sap” (Goethe) whose pH must remain extremely stable to maintain the life of the physical organism. Even the slightest change of blood pH is rapidly corrected by the body, which restores it to the ideal measurement of 7.39. When the body is unable to perform this task physical and mental disorders quickly appear.
The pH of the internal environment, the basic “ground” biochemical terrain, can tolerate more significant changes than that of the blood, but the pH of the internal environment should never go beyond 7.36 or 7.42 if good health is to be maintained.
Many individual organs and organic fluids, however, have a pH that is normally far above or below this ideal pH. The pH of urine, for example, may be 6, or even as low as 5 or 4.5. This is possible because urine is regularly eliminated and thus does not remain in the body for long. Areas of the body that are essentially acid include the colon (pH 6.8), the outer layers of the skin (pH 5.2), and the gastric region (pH 2). Others, in contrast, are quite alkaline: the inner layers of the skin (pH 7.35), the pancreatic juices (from pH 7.5 to 8.8), and the small intestine (pH 8).
These different values are all normal and correspond to precise needs of the body. For example, the extremely acidic nature of the gastric region is indispensable for protein digestion, and the high acidity of the skin helps it destroy microbes before they can enter the body. So restoring the acid-alkaline balance does not mean bringing the gastric region’s pH 2 up to pH 7 - that would cause serious digestive problems - but rather restoring the pH of the basic internal biochemical terrain. The acidification of the internal terrain is in fact the source of all health troubles caused by acidity.

Itwas not very long ago when only a couple of manufacturers produced laptops for gaming. Although they were not amazing sellers they did have large margins. They were the style of laptop that everyone desired, however the cost did not come in their budget. I guess you would say they were the best laptops around, at least performance wise. Even though they did get people excited I don’t believe they sold well because not many people really buy laptops that are overpriced. The primary brands have recently started taking advantage of enormous opportunities in gaming notebooks, so that is all altering.
Competitive pricing strategies are not normal is this market so tier 1 brands can be making tons of markup. This can be a good strategy to generate considerable profits for them. They can also use their enormous marketing spend to induce customers further into parting with their savings or getting out the charge cards to buy laptops like these ones. I am rather sure that local retailers will have to reduce their prices in order to compete. Now prospects will have much more choice it makes it arduous for the small resellers. Additionally the established brand name will give people greater confidence.
The notebooks being launched by branded manufacturers are all competing for the best laptop title. In my point of view the local resellers must take action on this if they are to prosper. This is a big sales feature that must be mentioned. Consumers that get high performance laptops will generally see past the frills. For certain buyers, the specs and power may be much more important than design. Obviously from the gamers way of looking at things, its a good situation. Advanced technology will be more affordable in the future for numerous purchasers as it will act to force costs down even more. Even though I say that, I am not so sure of my claims. New innovations are continuously being launched and that should keep prices constantly high. Competition normally makes companies to do more and give increased value so that looks good.
We live in a country where it is normal to treat our dogs as a members of the family - giving them Christmas presents (and receiving some from them, as well), taking them everywhere with us, dressing them up, giving them gourmet food, etc. As Americans, we just love our dogs! And why shouldn’t we?
One fun way to show our love for dogs is with dog jewelry. It is possible to find many different types of dog jewelry, but why not make your own? Making dog jewelry is a fun craft for kids or a great art project for adults. Make dog jewelry that resembles your own pet, or make jewelry to give away as gifts!
Here are a few ideas for how to make your own dog jewelry:
Shrinky-Dink. If you have never used shrinky dink, it is about time you did! Be sure to follow the directions on the packaging… basically, though, you can color on the shrinky dink sheets (about the size of a standard piece of paper) - cut out a dog shape, color it in, poke a hole in it, then stick it in the oven (again, be sure to follow the directions on the packaging!) In the oven, your shrinky dink will shrink, leaving you with beautiful and detailed charms. You can add these charms to a charm bracelet, turn them into earrings, or make it into a necklace (to make these things, be sure that you poke a hole through it before you cook it!)
Bottle Cap Dog Earrings. Take some favorite photos of your dog and cut out pieces that will fit in the underside of a bottle cap. Adhere the photo with Mod Podge (glue-like substance), then coat over the photo a few times with more Mod Podge. You can hot glue onto the back of these some earring studs.
Doggie Bolo Tie. Pick up a bolo tie clasp (you can likely get one at a local craft store or bead store - if not, try to contact a Western wear store). Find a round and smooth piece of wood (it will be easier to find one at your local craft store). Use a wood burning kit to create a beautiful dog or doggie bone, or paint and then seal a dog on it. Glue the clasp onto the back. You can use a leather cord as your bolo cord.
Bead Dog. You will need to head to a bead shop for this one. Pick up some wire (preferably sterling silver, at least 22 gauge), and also find a variety of rounded beads. Choose a large, rounded bead to be the body. Weave 3 pieces of wire through the hole - keep them long for now. The three wire ends at the front will be the two front legs and the head, the wire ends at the back will be the hind legs and the tail. For the tail, use lots of little beads, then twist the wire into a ball at the end to keep them on. The little beads allow your dog’s tail to bend however you want it. Use at least two medium size beads for the legs. For the head, use small beads for the neck, and a medium one for the head. You can paint eyes and a mouth on the head.
These are only a few ideas of what you can do to make your own dog jewelry. Be creative. Look around your house and see what you can use. Most of all, have fun!

If you’re over 40, you’ve got a ticking time bomb in your backside. It’s called benign prostatic hyperplasia…or BPH for short. This is the number one problem in older men.
Your prostate is normally about the size and shape of a walnut and is located at the base of your penis. It surrounds your urethra - the tube your urine flows through - and that’s exactly why it’s likely to cause you problems.
As you get older, your prostate grows and begins to squeeze the urethra and obstruct normal flow. Most men’s prostates begin enlarging after 40. If you make it to eighty, you have an 80% chance of having BPH.
So, what are the symptoms of BPH?
• Constant urge to urinate
• Frequent nighttime urination
• Dribbling or leaking after urination
• Difficulty starting urination
• A weak stream
• Never feeling the bladder is empty
Factors that increase your risk
The major factors that increase your risk of developing BPH include:
• Your medical history
• Family history
• Diet
• Hormone levels
Prevention strategies
It’s never too early to start preventing BPH…You can save yourself a lot of problems later. And if you already have the symptoms - you can keep them from getting worse.
Here are some simple and easy precautions you can take right now:
1. Get enough Omega-3 fatty acids: These are the essential fatty acids in fish, eggs, nuts and flax seed oil. You can get them by eating one of these foods every day…remember most fish that provide Omega-3 are contaminated with mercury…or by taking a supplement.
Studies have shown Omega-3 seems to stop the conversion of the chemical that triggers prostate growth. The recommended dose is between 3 and 6 grams a day.
2. Eat healthy: Basically, cut down on the crap … sugars, hydrogenated oils…the things that tend to cause inflammation. Get plenty of protein and veggies. And, to be safe, add a good, natural food base, multivitamin.
3. Watch your DHT levels: Most doctors will tell you that testosterone is the cause of prostate enlargement and give you treatments to reduce it. Now that’s great! The very thing that makes you male and gives you your virility is being taken away from you.
Dr. Al Sears wrote, “Testosterone is one of many related steroid hormones. Several are interconverted. Testosterone, for instance, can be converted into estrogens. But testosterone can also be converted into DHT. DHT is 9 times more powerful at stimulating growth of prostate tissue than testosterone is.
Testosterone maintains normal health of your prostate but DHT stimulates an overgrowth. DHT sends signals to the prostate tissue, making it swell. As the tissue swells, it impinges on the surrounding urinary and reproductive systems. (DHT is also the chemical that causes men to develop male pattern baldness.)
Your body converts testosterone to DHT with an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Exposure to stress and steroid related toxins in the environment appear to increase the activity of 5-alpha reductase. This deals a double blow to your manhood. It robs you of testosterone and it increases DHT.
But, without the presence of 5-alpha reductase, testosterone will not convert into DHT. And this is the concept behind well-designed BPH treatments. If you can block the action of the 5-alpha reductase, you can prevent and treat prostate enlargement while increasing, not lowering your testosterone.
Dr. Sears goes on to say, “You can stop 5-alpha reductase from making DHT with natural supplements. The best inhibitors of 5-alpha reductase come to us in the form of plant sterols. I’ve talked about some of these supplements before. Saw palmetto, pygeum, and pumpkinseed are the “big three”.
4. Get a regular exam: BPH and the worst case, prostate cancer aren’t something to fool around with. Especially if you’re over 40, you should see your doctor for a prostate check-up once a year. Include hormone blood tests, physical exam, and a comprehensive PSA test in your routine.

Twenty years ago a pithy and leading edge TV show was launched by Britain’s Channel 4 TV network. It featured a heavily made up Matt Frewer as the virtual character ‘Max Headroom’. The cyberpunk TV show gained cult status quickly and even crossed the pond to the US.
However, with all intelligent and witty work of that time, its life was short lived. What Max Headroom did succeed in doing was setting the stage for things to come… Virtual People. Fast forward twenty years and avatars (animated or virtual people) are quite commonplace, you can even see them sellng things on ebay!
Avatars work tirelessly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. And with the state of current technology these virtual personalities can almost (I’m hedging my bets a little to avoid flaming emails) replace the human element in certain business functions. For the most part thought, avatars and virtual people are still an interesting experiment in Internet automation…at least they were until recently…

If you are running a home business you are surely aware of how important it is to have a good marketing strategy in effect. If you want to make a lot of money using the internet, you will have to know how to market your company effectively. There are a couple of tips that you can follow when you are trying to figure out how to make internet marketing work for you.
1. When you are looking into internet marketing ideas you will want to make sure that you leave no stone unturned. There are hundreds of internet marketing strategies that you can use; it is just a matter of finding out which one best works for you, and how to go about implementing it.
2. If internet marketing is an area that you do not excel at, there is no reason to get worried. One of the best ways to find out which internet marketing strategies work best is to ask around. In other words, find a couple of companies that are similar to yours and get in touch with them. Ask them what they do as far as internet marketing is concerned. Most people would be glad to help you out if you explain your situation to them. By getting information from people who have been successful,
you up your chances of putting a solid internet marketing strategy into place.
On a similar note, you can also join a couple of message boards or online communities for help. By belonging to an online community that concentrates on home business internet marketing, you will be able to network with other people that are in the
same situation as you. Again, you can pick their brains for information, while also sharing your tips and successes with them.
3. Don’t get stuck with only one internet marketing strategy in place. Many people put all of their eggs in one basket, and end up getting themselves in trouble when their internet marketing strategy does not work. For example, instead of simply using
affiliate marketing, make sure that you combine it with other strategies such as ezine advertising. This will ensure that even if one method is not working that you can still draw in some customers from your other avenues. Having a diverse internet marketing strategy will go a long way in ensuring that you never have to deal with slow times.
Overall, if you own a home business you will need to have an internet marketing strategy to succeed. Without an internet marketing strategy you will only be tapping into a small fraction of your potential customers. Implement an internet marketing strategy today, and see results by tomorrow. You will be amazed at how easy it can be!

Glass sinks are one of the most beautiful home trends today. It can make your sink a positive focal point. Many wonder if glass sinks would be a practical investment, but the truth is, that these sinks are as durable as they are beautiful, and with proper care they will give you satisfaction for many years to come.
Décor For The Room
Glass sinks are typically the vessel style sink which is becoming increasingly popular for home design, but they can also be wall hung or pedestal style. Many of these glass sinks also incorporate light into the design. The light can be above the sink, below, or actually inside of the glass to enhance the luminescence of the glass. For examples of these sinks, you can go to an upscale home design store, or you can check out one of the many online resources for information about glass sinks or retailers who sell them.
Styles Of Glass Sinks:
1. Vessel mount sink — these types of glass sinks are either mounted on the counter top or other surface with a self-rim or dropped in a hole in the counter.
2. Pedestal style — these glass sinks either have one single pedestal as a base or multiple legs.
3. Wall hung — these glass sinks, also known as wall-mounted, have the plumbing for the sink concealed behind the wall, and the faucet and other fixtures are protruding directly from the wall.
How Are They Made?
The temperature for producing glass products like sinks varies according to the style.
• Hot glass production: Typically used in blown glass the temperature may reach 2200 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Warm glass production: This is used during kiln heated glass works and the temperature can be anywhere from 1100 to 1700.
• Cool glass production: In this process, which is sometimes used in making glass sinks, the glass is at room temperature and is cut and pieced like a mosaic.
Techniques Used To Make Glass Sinks
Just as there are different temperatures that you use when you are working with glass, there are different techniques used to make glass sinks as well.
• Fused and slumped: Different pieces of glass are heated and allowed to melt together and then cooled into a solid smooth piece. Once the artist has the solid piece it is placed over the sink mold and heated just enough that it “slumps” into the mold. Then, it is quickly cooled to avoid cracking.
• Hand blown glass: This may be what you typically think of when you think of artistic glass, but it is also used in producing glass sinks. The artist heats the glass at the end of a hollow pipe or tube and then blows into the tube to make a hollow center. Then the artist is able to shape and later cut the glass to fit the desired shape.
• Mosaic glass: This is done by using cold cut glass pieces glued to a glass sink bowl and which are then grouted, cemented, sealed, and coated with a finish.
All of these sinks are extremely durable and easy to maintain if you just educate yourself on the methods. By using gentle cloths and cleaners you can keep them looking beautiful for many years to come-and they will reward you with style and elegance.

Have you ever heard that saying, “The show must go on”? When you hear it, you think of what is commonly referred to as “Show-biz,” don’t you? But where can you go to see the best acting money can buy, any day of the week? No, I’m not talking about the theatre or TV. I’m talking about the “Restaurant-biz.” Servers, bartenders, hostesses, and restaurateurs act on a daily business. Their performance is crucial! Every movement, every word, every bite is an integral part of the restaurant-goers experience, and any one of these parts, if it isn’t just right, could lead to the restaurant-goer, well, going.
Many a restaurant owner has held their breath as they flipped to the local restaurant critic’s (probably some pompous, pretentious old windbag), page to see what he or she has to say about their establishment. This write-up has the power to make or break a restaurant, especially a privately owned one. Unfortunately the only critiques a server gets to give are given behind a kitchen door, in a server station, or over a beer (or several) at the end of a shift. Well, the restaurant critic has held the pen too long! The time has come for the server to speak up and critique the customer for a change!
I, as a former member of the exclusive club known as the Restaurant Industry, am about to attempt a categorization of several different types of patrons. This will be the first installment of a series I like to call, “The Restaurant Chronicles.” In this, Part 1, I will begin a labeling process which will hopefully serve as both comic relief for others in our distinguished field, and also to illuminate those who may unknowingly belong to one (or more) of the following groups. Let’s see, where should we begin?
The Chatty-Cathy: This breed of customer is more interested in gabbing and/or gossiping with friends or colleagues than ordering or eating food. She or he is content to have the server stand and wait while finishing the conversation. This customer will ignore the server every time they come back and ask whether a refill or some other service is needed. If the server has to repeatedly ask the question, this customer will often flash a dirty look or make a snide comment.
The Cell Phone Addict: This lonely soul cannot seem to put their cell phone down long enough to even order. They insist on pointing to items on the menu and requiring their server to guess at their order instead of simply putting their phone down and speaking.
The Sally: If you’ve seen the movie When Harry met Sally, you have seen a frighteningly realistic example of the high-maintenance guest. This person says thing like, “I’ll have this roast turkey sandwich, except can I get it with mustard instead of mayonnaise? Actually can I have a little bit of both on the side, and, uh, no tomatoes? Do you have rye bread? Could you have them toast it? And could I have a mixed green salad instead of the pasta salad, but with ranch…I don’t like that vinaigrette you guys use. Do you think I could get a coke instead of this tea? It tastes funny.” Although they speak in sentences that sound like questions, an experienced server recognizes them for what they truly are, demands.
The Dummy: This simple creature somehow manages to find their way to the restaurant, although it’s hard to imagine how. They come in through a door directly below a giant neon sign, flashing the word “OPEN,” and ask, with a blank look on their face, “Are you guys open?” The menu may have the word, in huge letters, BREAKFAST on the cover, and they will ask, “Are you guys serving breakfast?” This client teaches their server the art of patience, because it is nearly impossible not to reply sarcastically to such moronic questions.
The Merry Mommy Club: This group of lovely ladies and their lovely children is always a treat, if your idea of a treat is hurdling small children, while at the same time, maneuvering large heavy trays of hot food and liquids without losing your balance, as they run under your feet. This species of diner loves to sit for hours and hours chatting, as they consume only small side dishes of food and sip away gallons of decaffeinated coffee, or every server’s favorite, hot tea! They squeak in babynese, and compete in the “My baby can do this…” game. They also are notorious for their lack of observational skills, as their older children compete in creating a virtual “Obstacle Course” for servers and other guests by climbing on top of tables, running behind the counter, and other various activities.
Well, that concludes Part 1 of the Restaurant Chronicles, but fear not, my wonderful readers! I plan to continue my exploration of this fascinating creature, known as the diner, in Part 2. So please come back and learn more about this interesting, exciting, and often times, just plain weird business, we Restaurant folk affectionately refer to as, well…our job.
Toni Kiser is a recently married, college graduate from North Carolina. She worked as a server, manager and bartender in the Restaurant Industry for over 12 years.
