The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Badminton tournament has just concluded its sixth day of competitions and it was Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) that emerged as the leader after remaining undefeated for the past six games.
The 72nd edition of the badminton tournament is being held at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
The ADMU shuttlers easily defeated Adamson 5-0 to continue its dominance in the men’s division. Last season, ADMU placed sixth thus its performance this year was a major surprise.
University’s bets Antonino Gadi and Paolo Sunga beat Adamson’s Jordan Alcantara and Akira Gan 21-15, 21-7 and 21-8, 21-10 respectively.
University of the Philippines (UP) also improved its standing. A fifth placer last season, it is now in second place with a 4-1 standing after it defeated National University (NU). It was Paul Vivas and Kelvin Panganiban who outlasted their rivals in the singles matches while the doubles matches was dominated by Kyle Vinarao and Paul Vivas.
Defending champion University of the East (UE) suffered its first defeat against La Salle University while last season’s runner up University of Sto. Tomas (UST) is still on its course of clinching the championship after its bets managed to scrape a 3-2 victory.
In the women’s side, defending champion Far Eastern University (FEU) and runner up De La Salle University are still on course to lift their badminton rackets and meet in the finals for the second straight year as both teams amassed identical 6-0 records, remaining unbeaten among its rivals.
The last day of eliminations will take place this Saturday with DLSU and FEU expected to meet each other in the tournament finals.
