Britain’s Health Secretary Andy Burnham has recently announced that the Government had decided to accept all the 20 recommendations of the Steve Boorman report that focuses on the health and wellbeing of the NHS staff. The report, funded by the Department of Health, is expected to save nearly 555 pounds and 3.4 million working days annually.

The report suggests all NHS organisations to put into place a health and wellbeing initiative focusing on prevention of ailments rather than cure, and it seeks to create accountability of the senior management for the effectiveness of all such measures. It also calls for a yearly review of the improvement in health and welfare of the staff.

Another significant feature of the report is that it stresses on the need for early intervention for employees with musculo-skeletal disorders and mental health problems so that their suffering is lessened and they do not remain absent from the workplace for too long.

Burnham said that the motive of the NHS is to deliver heath services to the people, and this can only be done effectively when NHS employees are given adequate care and their wellbeing is ensured.

Burnham added that this was why he was accepting the Boorman Report, and he would see to it that NHS organisations are given all help to implement its recommendations. He hopes the scheme will benefit the NHS staff and that its results will be seen in better healthcare services to patients.

Burnham further said that the Government wants NHS to serve as a model of employee care for all other organisations. He pointed out that a saving of 555 million pounds would come off the recommendations’ execution, and that this money could be reinvested in patient care. This reinvestment would greatly save the taxpayers’ money.

The Department of Health has now come up with an action plan and has allocated 6.5million pounds for the speedy realization of the new health and welfare schemes for NHS staff members.

All organisations need to make appropriate efforts to protect the well-being of staff. The Certificate in HR Practice imparts training and help to managers in the preparation of appropriate policies and procedures to successfully help employers tackle stress in the workplace.
